The Texas Fire Museum

The Texas Fire Museum
The Texas Fire Museum is a public charity. TFM educates the public about fire safety and loss prevention, preserves the heritage of fire services, and honors the men and women who fight fires.

Over 60 antique fire vehicles showcase a century of fire service. TFM displays over 500 examples of vintage equipment and tools. They operate the world’s largest collection of warning signals, including rotating beacons, flashing lights, and sirens.

The Dallas Fire Department Maintenance Facility in West Dallas was the first in the city dedicated exclusively to servicing fire trucks. Construction began at 2600 Chalk Hill Road in 1960. A 35,000 square foot building was completed in June 1961. Over the years, more buildings were added, culminating in a total of 125,708 square feet. In 1987, the Fire Department moved all service work to a location in East Dallas.

The old West Dallas facility sat unused until 1999 when the city accepted a visionary proposal to bring the building and grounds back to life as the Texas Fire Museum. The State of Texas chartered Texas Fire Museum Inc. on September 3, 1999. The corporation manages and operates exhibition, shop, and storage facilities leased by the City of Dallas.

In February 2000, thirteen volunteers began the long process of adapting the complex. Hundreds of volunteers worked over 25,000 hours to create a museum that has become the premier center for antique fire apparatus restoration.

The Texas Fire Museum restores hand-drawn, horse-drawn, and motorized fire apparatus. The museum operates the former maintenance shops of Dallas Fire Department.
